WELDING

Ready to apply to Northern Marianas Technical Institute?

OVERVIEW:

Welding will allow you to become an asset in the Construction Industry with focus in the
welding aspect. It will start with a prerequisite class that teaches the basics for the construction trade
then focusing on welding basics, safety, and materials and lastly understanding the welding principles
and dynamics. With the guidance of our industry professionals, students will take a test at the end of
each class to become certified by the National Center for Construction Educations and Research (NCCER)
which is recognized nationally in the United States.

Core:

Core class is a prerequisite class that is needed before continuing any construction specialty
trade. This gives the basic knowledge from construction math, introduction to hand tools and power
tools, introduction to drawings and basic materials handling. It also teaches about employability and
communication.

Welding Level 1:

Starting from basic welding, you will learn about cutting with oxyfuels, plasma arc, and air-
carbon arc. Then transition into base metal preparations, weld quality and alignments. Lastly Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) equipment, electrodes and backing, including: beads, fillet, groove, and
open-root groove welds. Everything you need to know for basic welding.

Welding Level 2:

This more advanced course will emphasize on welding symbols, reading welding drawings,
physical characteristics and mechanical properties of metals. A more detailed class regarding preheating
and post heating of metals, Glass Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux-cored, Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas
Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
